6 Ways to Stay Focused on Your Goals

Easier said than done, the expression goes. But when it comes to not doing work toward your goals, falling back on this expression can have some serious consequences. Here are a few tips for staying on track.

1: Make a note of it.

When it comes to keeping appointments and fulfilling deadlines, most individuals have to write them down—or else they vanish until the event has passed. The same is true for objectives. Without visibly concretizing your purpose in paper, it is likely to vanish into thin air.

2. Create a timetable.

If your objective does not have a deadline, you may always postpone it if life gets in the way or if you simply feel lazy. Make a note of the aim on your calendar. If it's something important, don't try to jam too much else into the days before your deadline.

3. Disassemble it.

Your objective will be easier to achieve if you divide it into manageable steps. When architects plan a structure, they don't just put it up in one day: it's erected in stages, beginning with the foundation and progressing upward. The same may be said for your aim. Depending on how far out the deadline is, divide it into weekly, monthly, or even yearly pieces.

4. Hold yourself accountable.

According to research, when you have to report to someone else, you are more likely to stay on course. Choose an accountability partner—this might be someone with a similar aim, such as a gym partner, or it could simply be a friend or family member. Set aside times to check in and update them on your progress.

5. Maintain a positive attitude.

Remember The Little Engine That Could? He was able to climb the hill because he kept saying, "I think I can, I think I can." You should have the same reaction to your goals, both verbally and mentally. Affirmations, optimistic thinking, and the support of those around you can help you reach for the clouds.

6. Take Care of Yourself.

When you reach a milestone, treat yourself to something nice, such as going out to lunch or purchasing a new piece of clothes. When you meet your objective, plan a special event or prepare to receive a prize. Teachers excel at utilizing this strategy: when their class achieves a behavioral or educational goal, they throw a pizza celebration. Why not use the same method and reward yourself with a tasty treat when you reach the end of the road?
