4 Things to Consider When Deciding Which Goals to Pursue

Congratulations if you've adopted the fantastic practice of establishing goals for yourself—but a new issue can often arise when we choose too many goals. Here's a method for sorting among the stars to choose which ones to aim for.

1. Consider the big picture as much as possible.

Set aside some time for introspection, journaling, and exploration of who you are as a person and what is important to you. Make a list of your top ten most significant values. After that, consider what you want more than anything else in life and write it down.

Keep it brief, sweet, and to the point—no more than one sentence. You'll be surprised at how having clarity on the big picture may help you sort through your goals and find the ones that are important to you.

2. Consider your budget and make appropriate compromises

When it comes to goal setting, it is critical to consider the limits you confront and to be realistic. Saving a million dollars in a year is not possible if you have a nine-to-five job earning the median wage (probably).

Drop that aim or set it away for later, and instead choose something more manageable, such as saving a few thousand dollars. Money is not the only consideration; time and physical limits must also be considered... This leads us to our following point:

3. Consider your health.

If you have a work-related goal, such as hitting six figures or something similar, and your doctor has also advised you that your health is in peril, it may be time to put your financial ambitions aside and focus on your health.

Perhaps going for a thirty-minute walk every day is more vital than cramming in a few extra hours of work every week. If you don't choose the former, the latter may drive you to a point where neither aim can be met.

4. Be mindful to those around you.

If you are in a situation where other people rely on you, such as family or coworkers, you may need to sacrifice some of your personal ambitions in order to meet their requirements.

For example, if you're a parent with multiple children and want to obtain a black belt in Tae Kwon Do but your children are suffering in school, you can lay aside your desire to be Jackie Chan and spend some time each day helping them with their homework.
